Wawi District Tribal Agricultural Development Project

This project uses a multi-faceted and sustainable approach to improve the quality of life physically, financially, socially and spiritually for hilltribe groups in the Wawi Valley . The primary method is to develop organic and sustainable agriculture.

This project works with six villages in the mountainous area of Wawi District. These villages remain poor due to their dependence on unpredictable crops and the expenses of transporting goods to market. Inadequate income is an obstacle to education, paying medical bills and transportation. Materialism is also contributing to an increased drive for cash, which is leading many people to take out loans and even leave their families to migrate to the city. This causes a breakdown of family units, a loss of culture and identity and even a loss of faith in the pursuit of wealth. This seems to contribute to the ever present problems associated with drug-use, prostitution, HIV-AIDS, STDs and human trafficking.
To address these issues, the project focuses on community economic development to improve the quality of life of the hilltribe groups in the Wawi Valley .

The project aims to improve food security and safety, decrease expenses while increasing income through the implementation of local activities such as sustainable agricultural techniques, and reduce livestock mortality.  We are also working with the Micro Economic Development Project (MEDP) on developing Savings Groups for the communities.

Our method is both integrated and learning-focused. MMF has helped the communities to form a Learning Center where local people meet and receive training related to sustainable livelihoods. Models families who are already working well together and exemplifying good values are highlighted in the communities. The project emphasizes sustainable agriculture in the hopes that the land and soil will return healthy and productive for many generations ahead. We are also working on linking the model families with local churches. Together, all of these practices promote the social, economic, and spiritual development of the Wawi Valley .
